Origin
Flora started as a scarf. In 1966 Grace Kelly walked into the Gucci boutique on Via Montenapoleone, and Rodolfo Gucci, wanting to hand a princess something worthy, commissioned illustrator Vittorio Accornero to draw one. What came back was a garden in 37 colours: daffodils, poppies, butterflies and beetles, loosely traced to Botticelli's Primavera. That print became Gucci shorthand. Flora Gorgeous Gardenia is the eau de parfum reading of it, built under Alessandro Michele with perfumer Honorine Blanc, and it does not do restraint. Michele cast Miley Cyrus as its face, shot by Petra Collins in a candy pink fantasy world, because the brief was joy rather than polite florals. Utility
Two ways to wear it. Daytime: two sprays, one either side of the neck, over linen or a light slip dress, and let the pear and mandarin carry brunch, class or a workday. Night: three sprays, neck plus chest and inner elbows, with something structured like a black dress or tailored trousers, so the brown sugar and patchouli base does the closing. Expect roughly six to eight hours on skin, with arm's length projection for the first two to three hours before it settles close. It lasts noticeably longer on fabric, so a spray on a scarf is the honest longevity cheat. Best in spring and summer heat; it can feel heavy in real cold. Store the bottle upright, out of the bathroom and away from direct sun.
Influence
The relaunch landed with Miley Cyrus as the face, directed and shot by Petra Collins under Alessandro Michele's creative direction. Michele's reasoning was blunt: he called her an artist whose spirit is rock and roll and eclectic at the same time, and that is exactly the register the scent works in. Cyrus sang the campaign track herself. The film, all pink cottage and groomed poodles and electric guitar on a beach, handed the fragrance a personality most designer florals never get, and it pulled Flora from heritage print into something younger buyers actually wanted on a vanity. The gardenia has since become the anchor of a whole Flora Gorgeous sub line, with an Intense flanker built on top of it.
Construction
It opens bright and almost edible. Pear blossom, red berries and Italian mandarin land first, so the first ten minutes read fresh and fruity rather than powdery. Then the heart takes over completely. White gardenia sits at the centre, propped up by jasmine grandiflorum absolute and frangipani, which is why the middle stretch smells creamy and tropical instead of sharp. Gardenia turns soapy in weaker builds; here the frangipani keeps it fleshy. The base is the part people get attached to: a brown sugar accord over patchouli, warm with a caramelised edge that stops the white florals from reading like a bar of soap. Eau de parfum concentration means that sugar stays legible deep into the dry down.
