Released on 19 June 2024 and part of the Handball line. This release has a suede upper in Blue/Cloud White/Better Scarlet. Blue, white and scarlet on a Handball Spezial is the shoe at its most graphic. The Spezial was built as indoor court equipment, low and wide and flat, for a fast sport played on wood, and that single-purpose logic is the oldest thing about adidas: a founder in Herzogenaurach who made shoes for one event at a time rather than one shoe for everything. Because the silhouette is so plain, colour is the only variable, and a three-colour build turns it from a quiet suede low top into something that reads across a room. The stripes carry the contrast and the sole grounds it.
Two recipes. Off-white or ecru wide trousers with a navy knit, so the blue leads and the scarlet functions as a small accent. Or dark indigo denim with a white tee and a red cap, deliberately picking up the third colour rather than ignoring it. Best for dry days, evenings and long walks on pavement, worst in rain given the suede. Size true; the last is wide, so narrow feet may want a thicker sock. Spray with suede protector before first wear, brush against the nap when dry, and keep coloured suede away from direct heat and sunlight. Swap the laces to match whichever of the three colours you want leading, since that single change reframes the whole shoe.
The Spezial travelled through British casual and terrace dressing before it reached a general audience, part of the movement that made adidas Originals the base layer of European street style. Multi-colour pairs sit at the sharper end of that history, closer to the football-adjacent colour-coding that terrace culture always used than to neutral everyday wear. If you know the shoe, a blue, white and scarlet pair reads as a specific choice rather than a default. Three-colour builds also travel better than they should for something this bold, because the shape underneath stays as plain and low as it ever was and keeps the palette from tipping into costume.
A suede upper with leather trim, a padded collar and a flat rubber outsole cut for indoor grip. The Three Stripes are stitched through the suede, which is where they began on adidas footwear, as structure that held the upper against lateral movement before they meant anything commercially. With three colours in play, those stitched rows become the organising line of the whole shoe. Suede in a saturated blue holds its tone well but water marks it permanently, so wet weather is the thing to avoid. The fit is broad through the forefoot with more collar padding than most Originals silhouettes, so it is comfortable straight away.
