Released on 15 August 2023 and part of the Restore TC line. This release has a knit upper in Black/Black. The Restore TC belongs to the part of Hoka's world that happens after the finish line. The brand started in Annecy, France in 2009, when Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, two former Salomon employees and long distance trail runners, decided they wanted to run downhill faster and built an outsole with far more cushion than anything else on the market. That founding logic, more foam than the industry thought reasonable, is exactly what a recovery shoe needs: legs that have already worked want depth underfoot, not feedback. In black, the Restore TC drops the loud colour blocking Hoka is known for and reads as a quiet everyday shoe, the ultra heritage translated into rest rather than racing.
Two ways to run it. First, the recovery uniform: black shorts or track pants, an oversized tee, a long sleeve knotted at the waist, the shoe doing the talking through its sidewall profile. Second, the off duty version: straight leg dark denim or wide cotton trousers with a cropped hem so the stack stays visible, plus a plain crew and a light jacket. Black keeps it acceptable for travel days, errands and long airport walks where you want cushion without a loud shoe. Wear it with a cushioned crew sock so the collar does not chafe. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, air dry away from direct heat, and never put it in a machine.
Hoka earned its credibility in ultrarunning and mountain racing, where deep cushioning on long descents was a decisive advantage rather than a comfort feature. The second wave came from healthcare, when cushioned Hoka models became the default on hospital floors for staff working twelve hour shifts, and that word of mouth carried the brand well past runners. Recovery footwear sits at the junction of those two audiences: people who have spent their day standing or striding and want the pressure taken off. The third wave was fashion, where the maximal silhouette read as running's answer to the chunky sneaker, and a shoe like this rides all three currents at once.
Hoka's construction argument has always been geometry before hardware. The house language is a maximalist midsole tuned for a low weight to cushion ratio, and an Active Foot Frame sidewall that sinks the heel down into the foam rather than perching it on top. Applied to a recovery shoe, that thinking gives you a deep, forgiving platform and sidewalls that stop tired feet sliding around. The black colourway does real work here: a single tone lets the exaggerated stack read as sculpture instead of noise, and it hides the scuffing and creasing that a shoe worn this casually will collect. Treat it as generous underfoot and let the shoe do the absorbing rather than looking for road feel.
