Origin
The Signature C monogram, the repeating interlocking C jacquard, is Coach's pattern code and the engine of its volume business. Maxi Signature is that pattern scaled up, printed large enough that the repeat becomes graphic rather than textural, and a Large City Tote is the piece that gives it room to breathe. The lineage runs back to a Manhattan workshop opened in 1941 by Miles and Lillian Cahn, then through Bonnie Cashin's decade of work from 1961 to 1974, which turned Coach from a leather supplier into a design company built on pockets, colour and function. A big open tote is the purest expression of that idea: no styling tricks, just a bag sized for a real day.
Utility
Two builds. Work: black tailored trousers, a fine gauge knit, loafers, the gold hardware picked up in a thin chain or a watch, tote carried in the crook of the arm with a laptop sleeve inside. Weekend travel: straight jeans, white sneakers, an oversized shirt, the tote used as a personal item under the seat with a pouch inside to stop small things migrating to the bottom. Size means you will overload it, so keep heavy items low and centred to protect the handle seams. Wipe the canvas with a barely damp cloth, condition the leather trim occasionally, and never hang it from a chair back by one handle, which is what stretches the strap drops.
Influence
Coach became a global brand under Reed Krakoff, creative director from 1997, who took a small American leather goods maker and gave it international scale, and it has been led creatively since 2013 by Stuart Vevers, who came from Loewe. The monogram tote is the commercial spine of that expansion, the bag that filled about 1,000 locations when the company passed 5 billion dollars in sales in 2013. US regulators describe Coach's category as the affordable luxury handbag market, and a large monogrammed tote is exactly what that phrase means in practice: recognisable, useful, priced to be bought rather than saved for.
Construction
Signature canvas is a woven jacquard ground rather than a printed film, which is why it holds shape and takes abrasion better than a soft leather tote of the same size at the same price. In Maxi scale the repeat is large, so the walnut and black colourway reads as a grid from across a room, with gold hardware giving the only metallic punctuation. Leather trim takes the stress points, and on a tote that means the handles and the top edge, which are the parts that fail first on lesser bags. Coach's whole leather thesis, set by Miles Cahn's proprietary tanning process in the 1940s, is that those trim pieces should darken and soften with handling instead of cracking.
