Louis Vuitton went a very long time without a perfume. The maison hired Jacques Cavallier Belletrud in 2012 as its master in-house perfumer, built him a laboratory in Grasse, and only launched its first signature scents years later. Cavallier Belletrud comes from a Grasse family that has been in the region since the fifteenth century, and before Vuitton he worked on Acqua di Gio and L'Eau d'Issey, so the bright, clean register is home ground for him. Imagination arrived in 2021 and started from a molecule rather than a flower. He worked around Ambrox, the crystalline material that reads like ambergris, and wrapped noble citrus and black tea around it instead of the usual heavy amber. This is the icon bottle for it: personalisable with your initials, and refillable at a boutique fountain.
Wear it in heat. This is a spring and summer signature first, the kind of composition that holds up in Indian humidity where heavier ambers turn syrupy, and the tea and Ambrox base keeps it wearable when the weather cools. Two sprays is the honest dose, one at the base of the throat and one on the chest under the shirt, because that citrus opening is sharp and a third spray makes the first hour shout. Longevity is a large part of what you are paying for: reviewers consistently report eight to twelve hours from something this bright, with moderate projection that stays polite in a meeting. Store the bottle upright in a cupboard away from sunlight, since citrus tops are the first thing heat destroys, and refill at the fountain rather than rebuying.
Imagination sits right at the centre of the argument about what a house fragrance is for. There is no supermarket version of it and no discounter shelf: Louis Vuitton keeps its perfumes inside its own boutiques, with the engraving service and the refill fountain attached to the purchase. That is why the bottle carries as much weight here as the juice does, and why buying it feels closer to buying an object than a bottle of scent. The dupe market moved on it fast, which is the clearest measure of how many people wanted that citrus and tea signature at any price. Among fragrance people, Imagination settled into the short list of expensive fresh scents that genuinely perform rather than evaporating by lunch.
It opens loud and cold. Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange and citron land like peel snapped over a glass, bright enough that the first ten minutes read as pure cologne. Then it warms without getting heavy: Nigerian ginger brings a dry prickle, Tunisian neroli rounds the edges, Ceylon cinnamon adds a spice you notice more on fabric than on skin. The base is where the Ambrox does its work. Chinese black tea extracted with CO2 gives a tannic, papery dryness, Ambroxan pushes a salty skin warmth underneath it, and guaiac wood with olibanum lays in a thread of smoke that stops the whole thing turning sweet. The finish sits close and clean rather than announcing itself across the room.
