Released on 7 July 2023 and part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a suede upper in Kombu Desert. Kombu Desert pairs a dark seaweed green with a warm sand tone, and on the 327 that combination does something specific. The shoe is built from the brand's seventies cross country and trail running shapes, where the outsole wrapped over the toe and the branding was drawn deliberately large, so it already looks like something designed for ground rather than for pavement. Putting a deep marine green against desert sand pushes it further into that territory, the palette of a shoe made to go somewhere. New Balance has been making running shoes in varying widths since the Trackster of 1960, and the 327 is the modern brand borrowing the proportions of that period without pretending to be a reissue.
Dark green with sand is an autumn palette that flatters earth tones. First recipe: brown wide leg corduroys with a cream knit, the sand accents linking the shoe to the top half. Second: black straight jeans with an olive field jacket and a white tee, where the kombu green sits close to the jacket and the sand keeps it from going murky. The flared heel and thin sole want a cropped or just breaking hem rather than a stack. Treat it as a walking shoe, not an all day standing shoe. The fit is narrow, so many take a half size up or a wider fitting. Brush the suede dry and re protect it before wet weather.
New Balance's most durable cultural thread is amateur running rather than celebrity. The Trackster of 1960 spread through YMCA fitness programmes and cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University, and the brand still sponsors New York Road Runners, which keeps it tied to people who run for their own reasons. The 327 quotes that world for people who never will. It arrived once normcore and then high fashion had already reclaimed New Balance's plainness as a design position, which is why a shoe this graphic reads as a design object from this brand rather than as sportswear from any other.
Suede and nylon mesh panels, kombu green carrying the upper with desert sand on the enlarged block N and the wrapped outsole that climbs onto the toe. The platform is thin and flat with a sharply flared heel and a light EVA midsole, so the ride is low and connected to the ground rather than cushioned, closer to a racing flat than to a daily trainer. The tread is lugged, a carryover from off road running. There is no headline foam here, which means fit is what makes it comfortable, and the brand's multiple width fittings, its oldest promise going back to the arch support business, are the tool to use since the 327 is narrow through the midfoot.
