Released on 21 May 2022 and part of the XC-72 line. This release has a suede upper in Marblehead/Rain Cloud. Grey Day on the XC-72 puts the brand's signature colour on the shoe that references its oldest working period. The XC-72 borrows from the cross country and road racing shapes New Balance was making around the time Jim Davis bought the company in 1972, when it had six employees turning out roughly thirty pairs a day and sold mostly by mail order. Those shoes were low, narrow and flat. This one takes the proportions and rebuilds them with a curved sole and a stance that belongs to the present, so it is a retro futurist object rather than a reissue. Grey is the correct dress for it, since grey is the colour that carried the brand's running shoes into everyday life.
Tonal grey is the easiest thing in your wardrobe to place, so let the sole shape carry the interest. First recipe: black straight jeans with a grey crewneck and a navy shell, the shoe reading as a continuation of the top half. Second: charcoal wool trousers with a white tee under a grey overshirt, a full tonal fit where the curved sole is the only line that breaks. The curve suits walking cities more than standing shifts. Fit is narrow through the midfoot, so take a wider fitting if your foot is broad. Brush the mesh and suede dry, keep them out of standing water, and clean the grey midsole before dust darkens it permanently.
Grey New Balance is the brand's whole cultural argument in one colour. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, the grey suburban running shoe worn for comfort rather than status, favoured by Steve Jobs and documented on Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed exactly that plainness as a design position. Applying it to a shoe built from cross country references connects the two halves of the brand's history, the accidental fame and the actual running, the second of which runs from the Trackster of 1960 through college cross country to the New York Road Runners sponsorship.
Mesh with suede and synthetic overlays layered in narrow racing panels across a graded grey base, with the block N stretched along the side wall and lighter greys separating the layers. The XC-72 sits on a curved EVA midsole with a pronounced toe spring, which is why walking in it feels like a roll rather than a step, quite different from the flat platform of a 574. The segmented rubber outsole flexes under the forefoot. It is light for its visual bulk and cut on a narrower racing last than the brand's other lifestyle shoes, so the multiple width fittings New Balance has offered since its arch support days are worth using rather than ignoring.
