Released on 18 November 2021 and part of Nike's Air Max Impact line. This release has a textile upper in White/Black. Air Max is the name Nike gave to the moment cushioning became something you could see. The line arrived in 1987, built around a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and it turned an engineering detail into the most recognisable design language the company has. Impact 3 applies that idea to basketball, which is the sport that made Nike culturally unavoidable after it signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and put Spike Lee on screen as Mars Blackmon to sell the results. White and black is the oldest court combination there is, the one that works in every gym and against every kit, and the one that reads clean from the stands.
Two ways to use it. On court, with mid crew basketball socks and shorts, where the black detailing hides scuff transfer from painted floors better than an all white pair would. Off court, with grey sweatpants and a plain black hoodie, which is the way team shoes have been worn casually since the 1990s. Indoor courts only if you want the outsole pattern to last, because rough concrete tears rubber designed for polished wood. Size true with room for a thicker sock. For care, wipe the white panels down after every session before sweat salt dries into them, pull the insole out to air after play, and never dry the pair in the sun because heat warps a midsole.
Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015, extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. That relationship is the formal version of something that happened culturally decades earlier. The Jordan signing and the Mars Blackmon films made Nike the shoe of basketball, and through basketball the shoe of hip hop, which is how Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became standard American youth dress. LeBron James and Kevin Durant have both carried signature lines. A white and black team shoe sits at the base of that pyramid.
White carries the upper and black handles the Swoosh, the eyestay and the sole detailing, which is the arrangement that keeps a basketball shoe looking sharp at speed. Nike Air is the platform here by name: a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole to absorb landing forces, the same principle the company has used since the first Air Max. Basketball uppers are built taller and more supportive than running uppers because the movement is lateral and sudden rather than forward and repetitive, so expect a locked in midfoot and a collar that holds your ankle. White synthetic panels will crease across the toe with every hard stop, and those creases are permanent.
