Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 4 December 2020 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Sail. The Blazer is one of Nike's earliest basketball shoes, from the years just after Blue Ribbon Sports stopped importing Onitsuka Tiger in 1972 and started selling under its own name with the Swoosh Carolyn Davidson had drawn the year before. It is the plainest expression of that mark: an oversized Swoosh running the length of a leather panel, because the brand needed the logo to do the talking. The Low 77 Vintage cuts it down to a low top and finishes it with an aged look, white leather warmed off pure white and paired with black. It is a shoe designed to look like it has already been owned for a decade.
A flat white leather low top is the most flexible shoe you can own. Wear it with cropped black trousers and a white shirt for something close to smart, or with washed denim, a striped tee and a bomber for a straightforward casual build. It sits well under a hem because the profile is thin. Blazers run long, so most people take a half size down, and the leather is stiff for the first week before it softens at the flex point. Clean the vintage leather with a damp cloth rather than aggressive foam, since the aged finish can lift, and keep them dry, because thin leather on a flat sole is not built for weather.
The Blazer sits at the point where Nike stopped being a distributor and became a brand. The Swoosh was first used in June 1971 and registered as a trademark in January 1974, and the Blazer is the shoe that wears it largest. Culturally it has had several lives, in basketball, then in skateboarding through Nike SB, then in general casual dressing during the 1990s and 2000s wave that pulled old athletic shapes back into ordinary wardrobes. White with black is the version that has never been out of place in any of those chapters.
Simplicity is the build. A leather upper with the oversized Swoosh stitched across the quarter as the dominant panel, a thin tongue, minimal collar padding and a flat rubber outsole with no cushioning unit under it. The Vintage treatment usually means a cream or off white leather, a tonally aged midsole and softer hardware, so the shoe never reads as brand new. That flatness is the whole appeal: this is what Nike shoes looked like before the sealed Air unit became a design feature with the 1987 Air Max. There is nothing between your foot and the ground except rubber and a thin insole, which is honest and not especially comfortable.
