Part of the Calm Slide line. This release has a eva upper in Bright Mandarin/Bright Mandarin. The Calm is Nike's minimal slide, a soft one piece sandal designed for the part of the day that happens after training rather than during it. Bright Mandarin gives it a strong warm orange, which is a deliberate choice for a product with almost no detailing to hide behind: with no laces, no panels and no branding hardware, colour is essentially the entire design. That is a long way from the company Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight started in 1964 to sell lighter running shoes, but it follows the same logic. Recovery is part of training, and a shoe for it is still equipment.
Two uses. Straight after training, wear with cushioned socks and shorts, which is what recovery footwear is for and what the wide footbed is shaped around. Or as summer wear: linen shorts and a plain white tee, where the mandarin orange becomes the only colour in the outfit and everything else stays neutral. Do not treat it as a walking sandal for long distances or rough ground, since there is no ankle retention. Rinse with cold water after pool or beach use, dry away from direct sun to protect the colour, and keep it out of a hot car, where moulded foam can distort permanently.
Recovery footwear became mainstream when training culture moved out of gyms and into everyday dress, the same shift that made Air Force 1s, Air Max models and Air Jordans staples of casual and athleisure wardrobes through the 1990s and 2000s. A slide is the least sporting item in that category and the most worn, because it is the shoe you put on when the workout ends. Nike has spent decades building a language where sports equipment reads as clothing, and a bright orange slide is that language reduced to its simplest sentence.
A single piece slide with a wide moulded footbed and a broad instep band, built to be slipped on without adjustment and worn without socks. The footbed is contoured underfoot so the sandal supports the arch rather than sitting flat, and the outsole surface carries enough texture to keep it usable on smooth indoor floors. A one piece build has no seams to fail and no lining to hold moisture, which is why this category exists for post workout and poolside use. Bright Mandarin is a saturated tone, so expect it to look strongest when new and to soften slightly with sustained sun. Sizing runs to whole sizes, and a slide should not overhang at the heel.
