Released on 18 October 2022 and part of the Court Borough line. This release has a leather upper in Phantom/Bright Spruce/White. The Court Borough is Nike's everyday court shoe, the basic leather low top that sits underneath the collectible silhouettes and does the actual work of getting worn to school every day. It descends from the same court tradition Nike entered when Ilie Nastase became its first professional athlete endorser, simplified and priced for volume. This is the grade school version in phantom with bright spruce, an off white base warmed slightly against a sharp green accent, which is a smarter pairing than the usual white on white. Style code BQ5448 017 identifies it. It is the least romantic shoe in the Nike catalogue and one of the most used.
Off white with a green accent is easy for daily dress: navy or grey school trousers, or dark denim and a plain sweatshirt with the spruce picked up in a cap or a jacket lining. The second recipe is sport, with black shorts and a white tee, where the green reads as a deliberate choice rather than an accident. Suits school, casual wear and light court use, not running. Grade school sizing runs close to true, so leave a thumb of growing room. Synthetic uppers clean up easily with a damp cloth and mild soap, which is the main advantage over real leather at this price, but never machine wash, since heat lifts the bonded panels.
Nike's cultural standing was built at the top of its range, through the 1984 Michael Jordan signing, the Spike Lee directed advertising and the run of Air Max and Air Force 1 models that became staples of mainstream American youth dress. But the shoes that carry the Swoosh into most lives are the ones like this: affordable, durable, worn until they fall apart. In India, where Nike has been priced roughly thirty percent above competitors and closed around two hundred stores from 2017, the accessible end of the range is where the brand's actual reach is decided rather than at the top.
Synthetic leather panels are cut to a simple court map: a full toe box, a stitched or moulded Swoosh across the quarter, a heel counter and a low padded collar. The tongue is thin, the lacing is straightforward, and underneath sits a rubber outsole with a flat court tread that gives grip on gym floors and pavement equally. There is no Air unit and no cushioning story, because the shoe is built to a price and a purpose. Phantom is an off white rather than a pure white, which is a practical choice on a kids shoe: it hides early wear better and does not look grubby after a fortnight the way bright white does.
