Released on 6 January 2021 and part of the Heritage Vulc SB line. This release has a suede upper in Summit White/White/Gum Light Brown/Cardinal Red. Nike arrived in skateboarding late and awkwardly. The company started building skate shoes in 1997 and could not get them onto the wall in specialist shops, where DC, Globe and Vans already owned the space. Nike SB launched properly in 2002 with the Dunk Low Pro SB, rebuilt with a padded tongue and collar and Zoom Air insoles so it finally behaved like a skate shoe instead of a basketball shoe in disguise. The Heritage Vulc is what that education looks like once the noise dies down: no hype tooling, no collab story, just the plain vulcanized silhouette skaters have trusted for decades. The Summit White and Cardinal Red pair, style code CD5010-100, keeps the palette to off white with a single red hit, which is why it works far outside the skate park.
Two recipes. Loose straight leg jeans cuffed to break just above the collar, a plain white or grey tee, and let the cardinal red be the only colour in the fit. Or go full skate uniform: cargo pants, an oversized flannel or hoodie, crew socks pulled up so the gum outsole and the red read together. Because the sole is vulcanized and low profile, treat this as a city, campus and cruising shoe rather than a running or gym shoe, since there is no stack height doing the work for you. If you are buying the Nike SB Heritage Vulc in India, the suede panels are the weak point in monsoon: brush them dry, never soak them, and keep the canvas out of a washing machine. The gum outsole yellows in sunlight, so store the pair away from it.
Nike SB's credibility was not bought, it was built by fixing the product. The brand could not get into specialist skate shops at first, and the way in was signing riders like Paul Rodriguez and Lewis Marnell and making footwear that actually held up under a board. The Heritage Vulc is the quiet end of that catalogue. It does not chase the Dunk's resale circus, which is exactly the appeal: you can skate it, scuff it and replace it without doing mental math about what it is worth. Summit White with Cardinal Red does the same job an all white shoe does without the blankness, one red hit on the Swoosh and heel doing all the work while the rest stays neutral.
The upper mixes suede and canvas, which is the honest skate shoe answer: suede where you need abrasion resistance, canvas where you want the shoe to breathe and break in fast. A reinforced toe cap sits over the exact area that ollies destroy first, so the pair survives past its first month of real use. The sole is vulcanized, meaning the rubber is bonded to the upper rather than cupped around it, and that is why the shoe folds with your foot from day one instead of demanding a break in period. Underneath, a gum rubber outsole gives you the tacky grip that reads well on grip tape and on wet pavement alike. Low profile, flat feel, almost nothing between you and the ground.
