Released on 8 January 2026 and part of the Mind 001 line. This release has the Light Smoke Grey/Photon Dust/Hyper Crimson/Chrome colourway. Nike has spent six decades solving for what happens during the effort. A slide is about the hour afterwards. Mind 001 is exactly that, a strap and a footbed rather than a shoe, and Light Smoke Grey is the least demanding way to own one: a soft, warm grey closer to concrete than to sportswear, so it moves from a gym bag to a doorstep without announcing anything. The company that began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, importing Japanese running shoes because Bill Bowerman believed American runners deserved lighter ones, built its name on making the foot's day easier rather than louder. A recovery slide is the plainest version of that argument: no laces, no lockdown, nothing to prove, just somewhere for tired feet to land.
Recipe one: grey marl sweat shorts, a washed black tee and crew socks, the standard post session uniform where the tonal grey stops the socks looking accidental. Recipe two: loose linen trousers and an open camp collar shirt for hot weather errands, treating the slide as a sandal rather than gym kit. Sizing on slides is unforgiving in both directions, so aim for your foot to sit inside the footbed edges with a small margin at heel and toe, and size down if you are between and want a snug hold. Rinse with cool water and wipe dry rather than machine washing, because heat distorts moulded foam. Light grey shows dust, so a soft brush every few wears keeps the tone even.
The first Just Do It advert, aired on 1 July 1988, featured Walt Stack, an eighty year old runner crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. That casting is the whole argument: Nike sells effort as an everyday act rather than an elite one. Recovery footwear is the same idea seen from the other end, gear for the part of training nobody films. Dan Wieden's line was later named one of the top five advertising slogans of the twentieth century by Advertising Age and is held in the Smithsonian, which is a strange fate for three words about turning up. A grey slide is that ethos at rest, and light grey in particular has become the default off duty tone of people who train and then want to disappear.
Slides live or die on the footbed, and that is where your money goes here. The build is a moulded body with a single instep strap, so there is no lacing, no eyestay and no break in period, and the whole thing flexes as one piece. Light Smoke Grey is a tonal treatment, which means the strap, footbed and outsole all sit in the same value and the silhouette reads as a single shape from a distance. Nike's cushioning work has always been about returning energy rather than only absorbing shock, and in a slide that means a footbed with enough give to feel forgiving without collapsing under standing weight. Expect it to feel plush at first and settle into a firmer, moulded shape as it takes your footprint.
