Nike's entire reason for existing was a running shoe problem. Bill Bowerman coached track at the University of Oregon and believed American runners deserved something lighter than the domestic market offered, which is why Blue Ribbon Sports started importing from Japan in 1964 and why Bowerman later ruined a waffle iron making a sole. The Vomero has been the maximal cushioning end of that lineage, the shoe for people who want the ground softened rather than the pace sharpened. The Plus pushes that further and Orange Pulse gives it a colour that belongs to the running side of Nike rather than the lifestyle side: hot, saturated, visible in low light on an early morning road.
For its actual purpose, easy miles: run these on road and pavement, on recovery days and long slow efforts rather than intervals. Off the run, orange needs restraint around it, so pair with black tapered joggers and a grey crew, or go full contrast with washed indigo denim and a white tee so the shoe is the only saturated thing in view. Size up a half if you run long distances, since feet swell. Mesh uppers do not respond well to machine washing; brush the dirt off dry and spot clean. Rotate pairs if you run daily, because foam needs a day to rebound and dies faster when it never gets one.
Running is where Nike's credibility was earned and where it keeps having to prove itself. Steve Prefontaine was the first track athlete the brand endorsed and remains its symbol of running as attitude, and the Just Do It campaign opened in 1988 with an eighty year old runner named Walt Stack rather than a champion. The high cushioning shoe belongs to that second idea: the run you do because you do it, not because you are being timed. Bright orange is the road runner's colour, chosen to be seen. Worn off the road, it does the same job in a different way.
A high stack cushioned trainer is an exercise in stacking foam without losing stability, so expect a substantial midsole, a wide platform under the heel and a sculpted heel counter to stop the foot rolling on landing. The upper is engineered mesh built for airflow and stretch rather than structure, with the Swoosh integrated rather than layered on. Nike's foam work runs from Lunarlite through to the current generation, and the whole argument is the same one Bowerman made: take weight out, keep the compliance. Orange Pulse across a mesh upper reads as a single saturated block, with the midsole usually left pale so the stack height is legible from the side.
