Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 23 March 2023 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a synthetic upper in White/White/White. Handing the Air Force 1 to Billie Eilish put the model in the hands of a musician rather than an athlete, which is a longer standing Nike habit than it looks. The company's public identity was written in 1988 by an advertising line, Just Do It, not by a product spec, and its most explosive early moments were musical: the unauthorised use of the Beatles' Revolution in 1987 ended in a lawsuit and pulled ads by March 1988. The Air Force 1 is the right shoe for a musician's collaboration because it left basketball behind decades ago and became a mainstream youth staple. This version keeps the silhouette intact and lets the material and palette carry the collaborator's signature.
Utility
Wear it the way the base model asks to be worn: loose straight leg denim or wide cargos, a heavy tee and an oversized jacket, letting the shoe sit chunky at the bottom of the outfit. For a sharper take, cuff black trousers at the ankle with a fitted knit so the full cupsole and Swoosh line stay visible. Good for everyday walking, long days out and gigs, and not intended for sport. Try half a size down. Clean the cupsole with a magic sponge and the upper according to its material, using a soft brush and mild soap rather than anything solvent based, and let it air dry away from radiators so the midsole foam does not harden.
Influence
Nike's relationship with music has been both its best marketing instinct and its sharpest legal lesson. Beyond the Beatles case, Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art brought a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology. A properly negotiated musician collaboration is the mature version of that impulse. The base shoe already carries weight: from the 1980s the Air Force 1 sat with Air Jordans and Air Max models as a status marker in urban and hip hop fashion, then a mainstream American youth staple, then a fixture of 1990s and 2000s casual dressing. A collaborator does not have to explain this shoe to anyone. They only have to give it a new voice.
Construction
The Air Force 1 platform is unchanged underneath: a Nike Air unit sealed inside the midsole, the pressurised gas cushioning that made the model, wrapped in a thick cupsole with the pivot circle outsole and the wide, flat stance that has never been slimmed down. On the collaboration the upper is where the difference lives, with material choice, tonal treatment and branding placement doing the work rather than any change to the shape. Expect a structured, firm ride rather than a plush one, and a shoe that holds its form for years rather than collapsing into a slipper. Sizing runs long on the Air Force 1 last, so half a size down is worth trying before you commit.
