Origin
Released on 4 November 2024 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 6 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Black/Smoke Grey/Metallic Silver. The Zoom Fly sits in the part of Nike's range that exists because of what happened in 2017. That year Nike launched the Vaporfly, pairing ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to add spring to every step, and peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. A result that large reshaped the whole running shoe market. The Zoom Fly line is where that thinking gets built into something you can train in repeatedly rather than save for races. This sixth version comes in White with Black, the palette that racing shoes wear when the brand wants them read as tools: clean, high contrast, easy to see at speed and easy to photograph at a finish line.
Utility
First recipe, training: black split shorts and a white singlet, using this as your tempo and long run shoe rather than your daily easy shoe, since plated trainers reward pace. Second recipe, off duty: black tapered trousers with a grey knit, where a white performance runner reads as sharp rather than sloppy. The White Black palette is the easiest of the racing colourways to wear casually for exactly that reason. Fit performance runners true to size with a thumb of toe room, and lace with a runner's loop at the top eyelet if your heel lifts. White performance uppers stain fast, so wipe them after every wet run, never machine wash, and air dry away from radiators to protect the midsole foam.
Influence
Nike's running authority runs from Bowerman's waffle iron to a rules change. The waffle tread of the 1972 Moon Shoe and 1974 Waffle Trainer came out of a kitchen appliance, and forty five years later the Vaporfly forced World Athletics to legislate: on 31 January 2020 the body capped sole thickness at 40mm, limited shoes to one rigid plate and required four months of general retail availability. The shoes were not banned, they were regulated, which is a different and more telling outcome. Behind all of it sits a line of sponsored runners from Prefontaine, Sebastian Coe and Carl Lewis through Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. A white plated trainer is a consumer's access point to that programme.
Construction
Style code FN8454 100 covers the White Black colourway. What defines this category of shoe is the relationship between a responsive foam midsole and the rigid element running through it, an idea Nike proved publicly with the Vaporfly and has since spread across its performance line. The upper on a shoe built for tempo work is deliberately minimal, engineered mesh with structure placed only where the foot needs holding, which is the same principle behind Flywire, using cables to secure the foot with as little material as possible. Nike also runs Dri-FIT moisture management thinking through its performance textiles. In white, the midsole geometry is the loudest visual element, so you can see the stack shape and the toe spring clearly.
