Origin
Released on 13 September 2019 and part of the Adilette line. This release has the Supplier Color/Supplier Color/Supplier Color colourway. Blue is the colourist's choice on this slide, and colour is where Pharrell Williams has consistently worked as a designer collaborator at adidas. The Adilette 2.0 is a plain object with a specific ancestry: adidas built the original slide as functional equipment for wet floors, in keeping with the way Adolf Dassler founded the company in his mother's laundry room in Herzogenaurach making purpose built shoes rather than general ones. Taking that item and giving it a strong single tone turns a utility piece into something you choose rather than something you settle for. A saturated blue does more work here than any graphic could on the same surface.
Utility
Strong blue behaves best against warm neutrals rather than other blues. Recipe one: sand or khaki shorts with a white tee, worn barefoot for heat and travel, where the blue is the single colour decision in the outfit. Recipe two: cream drawstring trousers with a navy tee, using the shoe as the brighter echo of the top half. Avoid pairing it with denim of a similar tone, which flattens both. Rinse after pool and beach use to clear chlorine and sand from the footbed contour, wipe rather than scrub the strap, and dry in shade. Coloured slides fade unevenly if left on a sunny balcony, so store them indoors between wears.
Influence
adidas has two routes into culture and the designer route is the one it built deliberately. Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and the Stella McCartney partnership from 2004 established the model that every luxury house later copied, followed by Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and then by musicians working as collaborators rather than as endorsers, including Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and Beyonce. That is a different mechanism from the accidental one, where Run-DMC released My Adidas in 1986 as a song and the deal came after. A blue designer slide has no story attached to a stage or a stadium. Its whole argument is that someone chose this exact blue.
Construction
There is almost nothing to this build, which is why the colour carries it. One wide moulded strap sits across a contoured footbed, with no lining, stitching or hardware to interrupt the surface, so the shoe is essentially a single form in a single tone. Blue at full saturation reads differently across the strap's curve than it does on the flat of the footbed, and that shift is the only visual event on the shoe. adidas has used the Three Stripes structurally since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, and their restraint here keeps the slide reading as a designed object. Coloured moulded surfaces fade with prolonged sun, so storage matters more than cleaning.
