Origin
Miles Cahn's founding observation was about material, not fashion: baseball glove leather grew softer and more supple the more it was used, and he built a proprietary tanning process to replicate that, producing leather that was stronger, more flexible and able to absorb rich dyes. Pebbled leather is where that idea is most visible, because the grain gives the hide somewhere to move as it breaks in. The Smith Tote in a gold and denim multi colourway takes that founding material logic and puts it in a blue palette, which is the most American colour a bag can be. It is a workshop brand's product, from a company that started with six leather workers making wallets by hand in 1941.
Utility
Two recipes. Denim on denim, done properly: a mid wash jacket, darker indigo jeans, a white tee, the bag's denim tone acting as the third and deepest blue so the outfit has a floor. Or soften it: camel coat, cream knit, brown boots, the gold hardware tying to the camel and the blue reading as the accent. This is a daily carry piece, not an evening one, so treat it as luggage for a working day. Keep pens capped and loose inside pockets, since pebbled leather takes ink badly. Condition twice a year, keep it off wet pavements, and let scuffs on the grain settle rather than rubbing at them, which polishes the pebble flat.

Coach's American identity is not a marketing overlay, it is the company's actual geography: a Manhattan workshop in 1941, a first standalone store on Madison Avenue in 1981, an online store in 1999 and a public listing in 2000. Under Stuart Vevers, executive creative director since 2013, the label leaned hard into an Americana vocabulary, and denim tones are the shorthand for that. Jennifer Lopez has been the global face of the brand since November 2019, and Selena Gomez was announced as a partner in 2016 for the 75th anniversary. A blue leather tote is the least logo dependent way into that world, for buyers who want the material story without the monogram.
Construction
Pebbled leather is the honest choice for a tote. The raised grain hides the scuffs a bag picks up on floors, car boots and desk legs, and it takes dye deeply, which is why a denim blue can read saturated rather than washed. Gold hardware sits warm against blue and keeps the bag from looking utilitarian. Because this is leather rather than coated canvas, the body will slouch with use, and that is the intended arc: Coach leather is meant to look better used than new, the whole point of the process Miles Cahn developed. The multi in the colourway means contrast panels or trim carry the tonal shifts, so scuffing on one panel will not read as damage across the whole bag.
