Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 21 July 2022 as part of Nike's Cortez line. This release has a textile upper in Light Smoke Grey/Coral Chalk/Varsity Maize/Blue Fury. Nike stopped being a middleman in 1972. Until then the company was Blue Ribbon Sports, importing Onitsuka Tiger since 1964 and selling shoes out of the boot of Phil Knight's car at track meets, driven by Bill Bowerman's belief that runners deserved lighter shoes than the American market offered. The Cortez belongs to the years around that break, when the Swoosh was new and a running shoe was a thin upper on a flat sole. Union LA rework it here in grey, which is the least decorated way to approach a shape this old. There is no attempt to modernise the shoe, only to change who is presenting it.
Two ways to wear it. Grey flannel trousers with a navy crewneck and a white tee underneath, keeping the whole outfit soft so the shoe's texture registers. Or washed black denim with a cream chore jacket, where grey sits between the two and stops the contrast being harsh. Grey works with everything except beige, which flattens it. Old style runners are narrow and thin soled, so they suit dry days and short distances rather than long walks on rough ground. Size true or a half up if your foot is wide. For care, brush suede and textile panels dry, never soak the upper, and clean the midsole gently since aged finishes come off under hard scrubbing.
Nike's oldest running shoes carry the memory of the era before the company had a marketing voice. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, was the first track athlete Nike endorsed and remains its symbol of running as attitude rather than as sport, and his statue stands at the Beaverton headquarters. Everything that made Nike a household name came later: the Air Max in 1987, the Jordan signing in 1984, Just Do It written by Dan Wieden in 1988. A collaborator reworking a shoe from the early years is reaching for the period before the machine existed, which is the part of the archive that reads as the most personal.
Grey on a low profile runner is a texture exercise, because a single family of tone across the panels means the differences between materials carry the design. Old running silhouettes are built from thin panels, layered overlays and a stitched Swoosh running the length of the quarter, which is why they look constructed rather than moulded. Collaborative SP versions typically alter materials, ageing and finish while leaving the pattern intact, so expect the hand feel of the upper to be the point. Underfoot this is a flat, thin, low shoe by modern standards, with no cushioning platform to speak of, which makes it excellent for wearing and poor for running.
