Part of On Running's Cloudmonster 2 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Frost. Black Frost is the second generation Cloudmonster wearing its most severe face: a black body with a cold pale break, so the largest sole On builds shows up as edge and shadow rather than colour. The Cloudmonster is the model where the company stopped being modest about cushioning, and the second generation tightened that idea instead of shrinking it. The lineage goes back to Zurich in 2010 and a garden hose, when Olivier Bernhard cut the hose into sections, glued them to a sole and proved a hollow shape could cushion on landing and firm up for push off. Nike had said no. This women's build keeps the proportions in scale so the shoe stays big without becoming clumsy.
Black with a frost line is the easiest way to wear a big sole. Recipe one: black flared leggings and a cropped grey zip up, where the pale sole edge draws a clean line under the whole silhouette. Recipe two: dark straight jeans stacked over the collar with a white tee and an oversized black shirt, so only the frost tone reads. Use them for easy road running, walking days, recovery mileage and long hours on hard floors, not for lateral gym work. Fit true to size, snug heel, generous forefoot. Brush the pale sole edge clean, knock stones out of the pods regularly, and let the shoe dry fully between wet wears.
On is fifteen years old and grew at a pace that reads like an older company, listing on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2021 and reporting 2.32 billion Swiss francs of revenue in 2024. The Cloudmonster is the shoe that took the brand furthest outside running, because a visible maximal sole is legible to people who have never read a shoe review. The brand's crossover came through Roger Federer's shareholding from November 2019 and The Roger in July 2020, but the Monster kept the running credibility intact against Hoka, the rival On is measured against in the US performance category.
The Cloudmonster's hexagonal CloudTec pods load energy on impact and unleash it on take off, and that behaviour comes from geometry rather than from a soft compound. On engineers foam into cavity shapes so the pods compress horizontally as well as vertically, which is what stops a tall stack from rolling under the foot and gives multi directional support through the stride. Black Frost lays the pale tone along the sole edge, which makes the cavity structure legible from the side while keeping the upper in the colour that survives city use. Clear the pods of trapped grit weekly, because on a Monster the cavities are deep and they hold everything.
