Part of On Running's Cloudtilt line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Ivory. Black Ivory is the Cloudtilt colourway that behaves like a piece of stationery: two tones, no gradient, no argument. The Cloudtilt is On's everyday silhouette, built so the brand's exposed pod architecture can live with ordinary clothes, and this women's build keeps the volume trim so the contrast does the work rather than the bulk. The company that makes it is young. Founded in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, it went from a garden hose prototype to a New York Stock Exchange listing in September 2021 that raised about 746 million dollars. A shoe this composed is the output of a company that has never had to pretend to be old.
Two tone monochrome is the most flexible sneaker there is. Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a cream silk shirt and a black blazer, where the ivory panels stop the shoe from looking like a gym shoe under tailoring. Recipe two: ivory wide leg denim, a black fitted top and a camel coat, letting the shoe mirror the outfit exactly. Right for offices, dinners, travel and long city days, not for training. Fit true to size, slim through the midfoot, and pair with a low profile sock. Protect the ivory before first wear, use a foam cleaner and soft brush on marks, and keep them off wet dark ground where dye transfer stains pale panels.
On's identity is design object rather than street, and the Cloudtilt is where that identity is most visible. The brand's crossover moment was Roger Federer becoming a shareholder in November 2019, followed by The Roger as a limited edition in July 2020, which took a running specialist and made it something people bought on sight. The sporting side continued in parallel, with the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein and a tennis roster including Iga Swiatek and Ben Shelton from March 2023. A black and ivory lifestyle shoe asks nothing of you culturally, it simply signals that you chose engineering over branding.
CloudTec is a structural cushioning system: foam engineered into specialised geometries whose cavities compress horizontally and vertically, absorbing impact and supporting the foot in several directions through the stride. It is not a cushioning material, and the difference is why On soles feel soft under the heel and firm at push off in the same step. A black and ivory split makes that geometry easy to read, since the pale sections outline the cavity edges. For daily wear the split is also practical: black takes the scuffing, ivory takes the compliments. Keep the ivory brushed and treated, and clean the two tones separately so nothing bleeds across the border.
