Designed by Kanye West and released on 8 June 2022 as part of the Yeezy Foam Runner line. This release has a eva upper in Onyx/Onyx/Onyx. The Foam Runner arrived without warning, dropped inside Kanye West's WESTDAYEVER rollout with buyers pushed into a virtual waiting room and the whole run gone the same day. Steven Smith led the design, and the pitch was material as much as shape: a proprietary foam blending harvested algae with EVA, tied to a seed to sole idea of growing the raw input rather than buying it. The internet called it a Crocs knockoff within the hour, which is the standard opening act for a Yeezy silhouette before the hype catches up. Onyx, style code HP8739, is the version that outlived the noise. Full monochrome dark grey with no contrast anywhere, it became the default Foam Runner and came back for a second release after the first sold through.
Utility

Construction

The entire shoe is injection moulded from a foam compound blending lightweight EVA with harvested algae, which is why it weighs almost nothing and never needs breaking in at a seam, because there are no seams. Circular and oval perforations run across the upper and the sides, and they are structural as much as decorative: they cut weight, they flex where your foot bends, and they move air through so a closed shape does not turn into a sweat box. The ridged outsole is the same material as everything else, so grip comes from moulded tread rather than a glued rubber layer. Onyx carries that dark grey through upper, midsole and outsole, so scuffs vanish instead of announcing themselves.
