Released on 31 July 2025 and part of the 204L line. This release has a suede upper in Mushroom/Arid Stone. The 204L is New Balance working at the lowest, quietest end of its range, a slim profile shoe that has more in common with a court trainer than with the brand's big cushioned runners. Mushroom and Arid Stone push it further into that territory, two pale earth tones that sit close enough together to read as a single soft neutral. This is New Balance being deliberately unremarkable, which is historically its strongest mode. The brand began in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company, built its reputation on fit and support rather than image, and its most enduring shoes have been the ones that ask for the least attention.
Soft earth neutrals are the easiest thing to style and the easiest thing to ruin. Recipe one is tonal warmth: stone wide leg trousers, a cream tee, a tan overshirt, so the whole outfit sits in one temperature and the shoe finishes it. Recipe two is contrast: dark indigo jeans with a black knit, where the pale shoe lightens a heavy outfit. The low profile suits a slimmer or cropped trouser that a chunky runner would swamp. Best as a daytime and travel shoe. Pale warm tones absorb stains permanently, so protect before first wear, clean marks the same day with mild soap and a soft cloth, and keep them out of rain.
Slim, pale New Balance shoes exist because the brand's plainness became desirable. The 990 family became the American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, with Steve Jobs a documented wearer and Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff documented in the model, and normcore and then high fashion turned that flatness into a position in the 2010s. Once grey suede was a design statement, soft earth tones were the natural next step, and low profile models became the way to wear New Balance without volume. The brand made archive-as-fashion official when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis took over Made in USA as creative director in April 2021.
Two close neutrals give you a shoe read entirely in texture. Mushroom and Arid Stone sit within a narrow warm band, so the panel edges, the stitching and the side wall block N define the shape rather than any contrast colour, and a low profile silhouette keeps the midsole line thin and continuous rather than stacked. New Balance's cushioning philosophy remains the backdrop: ENCAP surrounds a soft EVA core with a moulded polyurethane rim so support does not compress away, and ABZORB is the softer foam and rubber blend for dispersing heel strike. On a shoe this slim, the width fittings the brand has offered since its arch support days do most of the fitting work.
