Released on 7 April 2022 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in Sea Salt/Black. Sea Salt is an off white with warmth in it, and against black it gives the 550 a softer edge than a bright white base would. That matters on a court silhouette, where the only variables are shape and colour blocking. The BB code marks the shoe's basketball origin, though almost nobody wears it for that now, and the low leather cut is what makes it useful. New Balance never designed this shape to be fashionable; it designed it to work on a court, and the fact that it now sits under trousers in offices is the same accident that turned grey running shoes into design objects two decades earlier.
Off white is more forgiving than bright white and pairs warmer. Recipe one: cream or tan chinos with a black tee, where the sea salt base and the trouser sit in the same family and the black panels supply the contrast. Recipe two: black wide leg trousers with a white shirt, a sharp two colour look that the low profile shoe fits under cleanly. This is one of the few pairs here that works with a full break hem. Care splits by material: leather cleaner and cream polish on the black, foam cleaner on the sea salt, and a midsole eraser on the foxing. Shoe trees keep the toe crease shallow.
The 550 rose on the same current that made New Balance fashionable in the first place: an appetite for ordinary American sportswear worn plainly. The 990 family became the archetypal dad shoe, comfortable rather than aspirational, with documented wearers including Hilary Duff, and normcore turned that ordinariness into a design position through the 2010s before high fashion adopted it wholesale. A court shoe in off white and black is the most usable version of that idea. It carries no season, no logo beyond the block N, and no requirement that anyone recognise it, which is exactly why it spread as fast as it did.
Sea salt leather forms the base with black leather panels laid over it, a slightly aged pairing that hides wear better than a stark white and black build. Leather is the structural material here, which is why the shoe keeps its shape rather than slumping, and why the first week of wear is stiff until the flex point across the toe softens. The sole is a low court platform, not a cushioned running unit, so you sit close to the ground with a firm ride. New Balance's multiple width fittings, the oldest technical promise it makes and a direct inheritance from its arch support beginnings, are worth using here: a stiff leather upper punishes a bad fit far more than a mesh one.
