The New Balance 9060 Black Cat is the blacked out version of a shoe engineered to look like it is moving while standing still. James Lee and Yue Wu started it in late 2019, then the pandemic split them across hundreds of miles and they built it across two years of remote back and forth. They raided the archive for it: the 99X series that runs back to the early eighties, plus the 860v2 performance runner reissued as the project began. The name is literally 990 plus 860. This Black Cat pair, style code U9060ZGE, strips the whole thing to tonal black so the sculpted midsole and sway bars read as shape rather than colour. It is the 9060 for people who want the silhouette without the loud colorways that made it famous.
Two easy recipes. First, all black works hardest against contrast: wide cream or ecru trousers, a washed grey hoodie, and let the shoe anchor the bottom of the fit. Second, go fully tonal with black cargos or straight black denim and a charcoal overshirt, where the reflective N is the only thing breaking the block. It earns its keep on travel days, long walking days and evenings out, less so for actual running, since this is a lifestyle build. On sizing, the New Balance 9060 fits true to size, so take your usual number, and the chunky last is not narrow so there is no need to size up. For care, brush the suede dry rather than soaking it, hit scuffs with a suede eraser, and air the mesh out after humid days.
The 9060 did not build slowly. Joe Freshgoods opened it with the Inside Voices pack, the general release followed in urban grey and beige tones, and with a co-sign from Jack Harlow the shoe got called the sneaker of the summer. Mowalola, Bodega, Bricks and Wood and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone all took their turn on it. It crossed fully into fashion when Margot Robbie was photographed twice in a neutral-toned pair. The Black Cat sits at the opposite end of that arc: no collab, no story colour, just the shape in full black, which is exactly why it has become the pair people buy to actually wear out rather than shelve. It goes with everything already hanging in your wardrobe.
Layered materials carry the upper: mesh for breathability, suede and leather overlays for structure and texture, all in the same black so you read the geometry instead of the panels. Reflective trim outlines the N logo, the one detail that catches light after dark. Broad sway bars pulled from the 990 give the upper its sense of motion, and the tongue carries the jewelled tag shaped after the ABZORB pod visible in the 991 forefoot. Underfoot is why people wear these all day: a dual-density midsole loaded with big arcing ABZORB pods, ABZORB SBS stabilising the heel, and roughly an inch and a half of stack lifting you off the ground. Six diamond-centred tread structures, four forefoot and two heel, do the gripping.
