Released on 24 September 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Phantom. The 9060 is New Balance mining its own archive and coming back louder. Designers Yue Wu and James Lee started work in late 2019 with motion as the brief, pulling the sway bar and CR heel device from the 990, the running-era geometry of the 860v2, and the jewelled ABZORB pod from the 991 tongue badge, then exaggerating every proportion until the shoe looked like a retrofuturist concept car. Joe Freshgoods revealed it in May 2022 through his Inside Voices collection, ahead of the Mindful Grey general release that July. Triple Black Leather is the version that mutes the entire palette so the sculpting does the talking, and it is one of the rare 9060s where leather, not synthetic, dominates the build. You feel that difference the moment you pick the pair up.
Two ways to run it. First, tonal: black straight-leg denim or wide cargos, black tee, black crew neck, letting the leather overlays and nubuck inserts do all the contrast up close. Second, grounded: ecru or stone wide-leg trousers with a washed grey hoodie, so the shoe anchors the bottom of the fit. It suits travel days, long city walks and commutes, and the dark upper hides dust far better than any grey 9060. On fit the 9060 runs true to size, and the chunky build means it is not as narrow as slimmer New Balance shapes, so there is no reason to size up. Brush the nubuck dry, wipe the leather with a damp cloth, and hit it with a protector spray before first wear if you buy the New Balance 9060 Triple Black in India for the rains.
The 9060 landed at the exact moment New Balance turned from safe pick into default pick. Joe Freshgoods introduced it through Inside Voices in Penny Cookie Pink and Baby Shower Blue, Bodega followed with the Age of Discovery pair, and the silhouette slotted alongside the 550 and 2002R as one of the brand's most chased modern shapes. What the collaborations proved is that the 9060 can carry loud colour. Triple Black Leather proves it does not need to. Black on black is the pair that moves through an office, a late dinner and a wet street without becoming a statement you have to defend, and it is usually the second 9060 people buy once the bright one has done its work.
The upper builds in layers: a black mesh base with the majority of the overlays cut in leather, plus nubuck inserts, so the black shifts tone as light moves across the panel. That wavy overlay pattern is lineage doing real work, the 990's sway bars stretched across the whole side, and the N sits on the wall in tonal black leather so it registers by texture instead of contrast. Underneath is the split, podular midsole carrying dual-density ABZORB and SBS cushioning, the part that pulls the sting out of concrete and gives the shoe its stacked, semi-bulky stance. The outsole runs the diamond tread pattern lifted from the 860, and a translucent CR device sits in the heel like a magnifying glass over the foam.
