Released on 3 April 2024 and part of the Adilette line. This release has a synthetic upper in Solar Red/Solar Red/Solar Red. The Adilette is the shoe adidas made for the walk between the pool and the changing room, and it has outlived that job by decades. adiFOM is the modern rethink of it, where the whole slide is treated as one moulded foam object rather than a strap fixed to a footbed, which is the same appetite for engineering spectacle that produced the adidas 1 of 2005 with its microprocessor adjusting cushioning five million calculations a second. Solar Red pushes it further from function into object: a saturated, almost synthetic red that makes the moulded shape read as a designed thing rather than a utility item. The C designation puts it on kids' feet, which is where a bright monobloc slide makes the most sense.
Utility
This is a summer and monsoon shoe and it should be used like one. Recipe one: swim shorts and a rash guard for pool and beach days, where the closed foam body shrugs off water and sand better than any strap and footbed construction. Recipe two: cotton shorts and a tee for school runs, park visits and the general business of getting in and out of the house quickly, with cotton socks if the foam feels warm. Rinse under a tap and air dry out of direct sun, since prolonged heat will distort foam. Do not machine wash. Check fit generously, because moulded slides have no give and children outgrow them faster than they wear them out.
Influence
The slide is the part of adidas that reached everyday life without any campaign at all. The brand's biggest cultural moments were unbought: Run-DMC wrote My Adidas in 1986 before any deal existed, and the endorsement that followed became the first between a musical act and an athletic company. The Adilette worked the same way, moving from poolside to hostel corridors to airports to home, worn with socks in defiance of every rule about it. The moulded foam generation is where that everyday object became a design statement, collected in bright colours and treated as sculpture. Solar Red on a kid's pair is that idea at its least self conscious, which is arguably the correct way to wear it.
Construction
A monobloc foam slide is a genuinely different build from a classic Adilette. Instead of a strap sewn or bonded to a separate footbed, the body is formed as a single piece, which removes the seams and the parts most likely to fail and makes the shoe light enough to feel like nothing. That also means the cushioning and the upper are the same material, so comfort comes from the foam's density rather than from a lining. Solar Red carries across the entire piece, so there is no contrast to break it up and no place for dirt to hide in a stitch line. Rinse and it looks new. For a child's shoe that single material honesty is the strongest argument it has.
