Released on 12 December 2023 and part of the adiFOM Q line. This release has a eva upper in Halo Blue/Core Black/Aluminum. Adifom Q is what happens when adidas stops treating a sneaker as an assembly of parts. The shoe is a moulded foam form with cut-outs and a cage-like structure, closer to a sculpture with a foot hole than to a stitched upper, and the Q designation marks it as the most abstract of the family. Halo Blue with Core Black gives it a pale icy body against dark contrast, which reads clinical rather than playful. This is the same company that put a microprocessor in the adidas 1 in 2005 and splayed blades under springblade instead of foam, so a shoe made of a single moulded material is well within its habits.
This shoe is the loudest thing you will wear, so treat it as the centrepiece. First recipe: black cropped or tapered trousers with a black crew and no other accent, letting the pale blue form read as an object. Second: grey technical shorts with a white tee in warm weather, where the cut-outs make sense as ventilation. Foam shoes fit differently to lasted ones, with no give across the width, so try them before buying if you have wide feet, and wear a thin sock or none. Rinse rather than scrub, keep them away from heat, and expect scuffing to be the honest sign of wear.
adidas has built its reputation on two very different things: shoes designed by watching athletes, and shoes designed to prove a point about what a shoe can be. The second strand runs through the adidas 1, springblade and the printed lattice work, and Adifom belongs to it. That freedom exists because the brand's cultural position is secure enough to absorb weirdness. It was earned rather than bought, most famously when Run-DMC recorded My Adidas in 1986 without a deal and the first endorsement partnership between a musical act and an athletic company followed. Abstraction is a luxury only a brand with that history can afford.
Moulded foam construction rather than a cut-and-sew upper, which means the shoe is light, water-resistant and completely unlike leather or mesh in how it behaves. Foam takes marks rather than stains, so scuffing is the wear pattern to expect, and pale colours like Halo Blue show it faster than dark ones. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; foam handles water well but hates heat, so never leave them in a hot car or near a radiator, since moulded pieces can deform permanently. The cut-outs make the shoe breathable and also mean grit gets in, so rinse the interior occasionally and dry away from direct sun.
