This release has a eva upper in Wonder White/Core Black. adidas has a long habit of chasing engineering spectacle, from the adidas 1 of 2005 that was marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe with a microprocessor adjusting cushioning, to the springblade trainers that used splayed blades instead of foam. The adiFOM line is the current version of that impulse, pointed at sculpture rather than performance: one piece moulded footwear that treats the shoe as an object you step into rather than a construction you lace. The Q shape is the most abstract of them, a solid form with punched openings rather than panels. Wonder White with Core Black keeps the sculpture legible, a soft off white body with black picking out the details.
Sculptural shoes need simple clothes. Wide black trousers with a break, a heavy white tee and a boxy grey crew let the shape do the work, or try cropped cargos and a long black coat so the white form is the only bright point at ankle level. Socks matter here: a chunky ribbed sock in black or grey fills the openings and finishes the look, while bare feet make it read as a summer slide. Treat it as a casual and warm weather shoe rather than a wet or formal one. Rinse with cool water and mild soap when dirty, air dry in shade, and keep it away from heat that can warp the moulding.
adidas has run two parallel businesses for decades: the Trefoil handling lifestyle and heritage since it was designed in 1971 for the Munich Games, and the performance side chasing technology. The adiFOM shapes sit awkwardly and deliberately between them, using the brand's engineering appetite to make something that is not about sport at all. They belong to the moment when moulded foam footwear went from utility to fashion, and adidas answered with a form that is more product design than sneaker. Wearing one says you find the shape interesting, which is a different kind of confidence from wearing a heritage silhouette everybody already recognises.
This is moulded foam, not a stitched upper, and that changes everything about how you treat it. There are no seams to fail and no leather to crease, just a single form with cut openings that ventilate the foot and give the shape its language. Wonder White is a warm, soft white that reads far less clinical than a bright white, and Core Black provides the contrast on the branding and detailing. The foam is light, water tolerant and easy to rinse, which is the practical trade for having little structure and no lacing adjustment. Do not leave it in direct sun or a hot car, because moulded foam distorts with heat and will not return to its shape once it does.
