Origin
Released on 1 February 2021 and part of the Adilette line. This release has the Grey Three/Cloud White/Grey Three colourway. The Adilette Lite is adidas stripping its own poolside slide down to the least material that still works. The original Adilette was a functional object for wet floors and changing rooms, and the Lite version keeps that job while cutting weight and bulk out of it, which is a very Herzogenaurach way to solve a problem: Adolf Dassler built the company on shoes made for a single specific use rather than a general shape. This pair puts the Trefoil across the strap, the logo designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, used brand wide until 1997 and now the mark of adidas Originals. Grey keeps it neutral, so the Trefoil is the only thing on the shoe asking for attention.
Utility
Grey is the slide you can wear in public without it looking like you gave up. Recipe one: black jersey shorts, a plain grey tee and white crew socks, the deliberate sock and slide combination that reads as intentional when the tones match. Recipe two: loose linen trousers and an open camp collar shirt for hot evenings, worn barefoot, which is the version that works for travel and coastal weather. Rinse under a tap after beach or pool use, because salt and chlorine dry into the strap and stiffen it. Air dry away from direct sun to keep the moulded strap from warping. Sizing runs long on slides, so measure against your usual trainer size before buying up.
Influence
Slides became a permanent part of how people dress without adidas ever campaigning for it, which fits a brand whose largest cultural wins were unpaid. Run-DMC wrote My Adidas in 1986 and held their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden before any contract existed, and the endorsement that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company. The Adilette travelled the same way, from pool decks into hostels, airports, gyms and living rooms, worn with socks by people who were told not to. The Trefoil is what makes this version legible in that context. It is the Originals mark, the lifestyle half of adidas, printed on the most functional object the brand makes.
Construction
The Lite build is defined by subtraction. A single moulded strap sits over a slim, lightly contoured footbed, with no lining, no padding and no hardware, which is why the slide weighs almost nothing in a bag. The strap surface carries the Trefoil rather than the Three Stripes, marking it as Originals product rather than performance product, and that logo choice is doing all the design work on a grey body. Because the footbed is thinner than the classic Adilette, this is a slide for moving through a day rather than standing in one place for hours. The upside is packability: it flattens, it dries fast, and grey hides the water marks that show badly on white slides.
