Origin
Part of the Adilette line. This release has a suede upper in Core Black/Crystal White/Crystal White. The Adilette is the least complicated thing adidas makes and one of the few pieces the brand never had to reinvent. It began as the shoe you put on when you took the boots off, a locker room and poolside object that ended up outliving most of the performance shoes it was designed to follow. Because the shape is fixed, adidas expresses it through material, and this is the snake textured execution in black: a raised, scaled surface across the strap that changes how light moves over a shoe with no other detail to look at. The three stripes cut into the band remain the only branding it needs, which is the point of a mark bought in 1952 and used ever since as both logo and structure.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. Full black with a mid calf ribbed sock, wide track pants and an oversized tee, where the textured strap adds the only surface interest in the fit. Or barefoot with linen shorts and a loose short sleeve shirt in summer, letting the black keep it sharp instead of casual. Correct for pools, gyms, hotel corridors, beach days and the short walk to get food. Slides run large and the fit should be snug across the instep with your toes clear of the front edge, so size down if you are between. Rinse with fresh water after pool or sea use, since chlorine and salt dull the finish, and let them air dry out of direct sun rather than on a hot surface.
Influence
Slides moved from function to identity through football and hip hop: players walking out of dressing rooms in them, artists wearing them with socks in videos, and eventually an entire generation treating them as the last item of an outfit rather than an afterthought. adidas was the brand holding that shape when the shift happened, the same way it was holding the Superstar when hip hop adopted the shell toe on its own initiative in the 1980s. The snakeskin texture pushes this pair further, from utility into something closer to a dress slide, worn as a statement in a category built on having no statement at all.
Construction
The whole shoe is essentially one strap and one footbed, so both have to be right. The band arches over the forefoot and the snake texture is a finish on the strap surface, a pattern pressed into the material rather than any exotic hide, giving grip against the top of your foot and a matte break in the black. The footbed is contoured, with a raised edge and a scooped centre, so your foot locates itself rather than sliding around. Underneath, a flat outsole trades cushioning for stability on wet tile. Black on black means the only thing you read at distance is the texture and the three cut stripes, which is a deliberate piece of restraint.
