Released on 5 August 2024 and part of the AE 1 line. This release has a tpu upper in Acid Red/Core Black/Acid Orange. Mural is a colourway that tells you where a modern basketball shoe expects to live: not on a colour wheel borrowed from a team kit, but in the visual language of a painted wall. The AE 1 Low is the low cut version of adidas's current signature basketball model, part of a line that runs alongside the company's work with James Harden, its signature basketball athlete. Behind all of it sits the Superstar of 1969, whose moulded rubber shell toe was built to protect players' feet under the basket and which was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players by 1973. Style code JI4068. adidas basketball has always designed for a crowd as well as for a court.
On court, keep them indoors, lace from the toe up and finish on the last eyelet so the heel is locked, and accept a low top's trade of support for freedom on cuts. Off court, the graphic means everything else should be plain: black or grey trousers, a solid tee, nothing patterned. Cargos or loose denim work better than anything tapered, because the shoe has visual weight at the floor. Wipe scuffs off the same day with a damp cloth rather than a brush, use a foam cleaner sparingly on the graphic areas, and keep them out of the washing machine, which will lift printed sections and degrade the midsole.
adidas has spent two decades letting outsiders rewrite its product, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney since 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, then into music with Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and Beyonce. That habit changed what an in house adidas design is permitted to look like, and heavily graphic treatments on serious performance shoes are one of the results. The basketball credibility underneath it goes back to the Superstar being reportedly worn by more than 75 percent of NBA players by 1973, and to a moulded shell toe that became the most copied silhouette detail the company has produced. A painted colourway on a modern guard's shoe assumes both of those histories are already understood.
Low top basketball design is a trade. You give up the collar height that helps stabilise the ankle, and you get it back through the shape of the outsole, the placement of the lateral panels and how hard the lacing can pull the foot into the footbed. On this model the upper carries the graphic treatment across those panels, so the pattern is applied over structure rather than replacing it, and the Three Stripes remain integrated the way adidas has used the mark since 1952. Printed or multi tone uppers on court shoes are the hardest to keep clean, because scuff marks from other players' soles land as pale streaks across the graphic and cannot be scrubbed hard without lifting the print.
