Released on 1 April 2025 and part of the BW Army line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Core Black/Gum. The BW Army belongs to adidas's quietest archive, the utilitarian training shoes rather than the famous court and terrace models. Its appeal is the opposite of the Superstar's: no shell toe, no basketball history, just a low, plain trainer whose shape was decided by function. The Lux treatment upgrades the materials without touching the pattern, which is a specific kind of Originals exercise, taking a shoe that was never precious and making it so. Black with a gum outsole is the version that best serves that idea. The dark upper hides the shoe's humble origins, and the caramel sole gives it warmth, so the result sits somewhere between a heritage trainer and a plain leather shoe you could wear to work.
Utility
Recipe one: dark grey wool trousers with a black knit and a navy overcoat, where the gum sole is the only warm note and stops an all dark outfit reading as severe. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and the brand's biggest cultural moment cost it nothing: Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid and told a Madison Square Garden crowd to hold their shell toes up, with an adidas executive in the audience, before the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company existed. Terrace culture then did the rest of the work, digging through the less famous parts of the archive. The BW Army is exactly the kind of shoe that tradition rescues.
Construction
Lux means better hide and better finish. Expect a fuller grain leather or premium suede on the upper where a general release would use a thinner panel material, with the Three Stripes stitched through the sidewall in the structural role the mark has held since adidas bought it from Karhu Sports in 1952. The gum rubber outsole is a soft, grippy compound with a low stack, so ground feel is direct and the shoe walks flat. A padded collar and tongue give some comfort without adding bulk, and the low cut sits well below the ankle bone. Black on gum means the sole is the only warm element, and it will darken with wear rather than staying caramel.
