Released on 15 March 2023 and part of adidas's Campus line. This release has a suede upper in Better Scarlet/Cloud White/Off White. The Campus is adidas at its most stripped back: a suede upper, three stripes, a flat sole and nothing else to argue about. That restraint is the direct inheritance of a company that started with Adolf Dassler making shoes in his mother's laundry room in Herzogenaurach, where every panel had to justify itself. The 00s version is a specific act of curation, taking the proportions from the era when the Campus was thicker through the midsole and blunter at the toe rather than slimming it down to a modern last. Scarlet with a gum sole is the loudest way to buy it. Red suede against warm rubber is a pairing adidas has used across its Originals silhouettes for decades, and it works because the two materials age at the same speed.
Loose cream or ecru trousers with a white tee makes the scarlet the only saturated thing in the outfit, which is the cleanest way to wear this pair. Alternatively lean into contrast with washed black jeans, a navy crewneck and a grey jacket, so the red pops at the floor. White socks look correct here, red socks look like a costume. Suede needs maintenance: spray them before first wear, brush the nap back up with a suede brush after each outing, and use a rubber eraser on scuffs rather than water. Keep them out of rain entirely if you can, and never dry them on a radiator, which will stiffen and darken the panels permanently.
adidas Originals exists because the archive kept getting adopted by people the company never targeted, from NBA courts in the 1970s to hip hop in the 1980s, when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid, performed it at Madison Square Garden in 1986 with the crowd holding shoes in the air, and prompted the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The Campus rode a parallel track through skate, indie and campus wear without ever being assigned to one scene. Scarlet is the colourway for people who want that history worn out loud rather than quietly, and it does not need a celebrity attached to it to make sense.
Suede is the whole argument here. It gives the Campus its matte depth, its nap that shifts direction when brushed, and its vulnerability, since suede takes water badly and shows a mark permanently if you let it dry in. The 00s build carries a chunkier midsole and a broader toe than the slim reissues, so the shoe sits with more presence and slightly more underfoot bulk. Gum rubber below is chosen for grip and for the way it warms the red. Style code H03474. Serrated Three Stripes on the sidewall are stitched rather than printed, so they hold their edge as the suede softens. Expect the toe to crease into a single deep fold and stay there.
