Part of the Harden Vol. 8 line. This release has a knit upper in Footwear White/Navy Blue/Footwear White. James Harden is adidas's signature basketball athlete, and the eighth volume of his line arrives after enough iterations that the shape is recognisable before you read the branding. White with navy blue is the version that behaves like a team shoe rather than a release: a clean white base with a deep blue running through the sole unit and the detailing, the arrangement that has always let a basketball shoe fit a squad's kit. adidas has been building for named athletes since Adolf Dassler made event specific shoes after watching people compete, and the Superstar of 1969 was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA feet by 1973. This is the modern, unglamorous continuation of that.
On court, wear a cushioned crew sock and lace through the top eyelet, since the whole design depends on heel and midfoot lock. Off court, recipe one: navy sweatpants with a white tee and a grey zip hoodie, matching the shoe's own two tone logic through the outfit. Recipe two: light wash denim with a navy overshirt, where the white upper keeps the look bright and the sole ties to the shirt. Fit is performance snug and true to size, with very little give in the synthetic panels. Play on hardwood if you want the traction to last, since concrete grinds the pattern flat. Wipe the outsole before every game, clean the white upper the day it marks, and never machine wash them.
The two halves of adidas basketball are the archive and the signature era. The archive is the Superstar and its moulded rubber shell toe, made to protect players' feet under the basket, worn by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin and then adopted wholesale by hip hop, which gave adidas a second life it did not design. The signature era is where the brand competes now, and Harden is its headline. A white and navy Vol. 8 is aimed at players choosing a shoe for a season rather than collectors choosing one for a shelf, which is the more honest end of the basketball market.
Harden's game is built on deceleration and lateral change, so the shoe is engineered around holding a foot that is constantly trying to slide off its own platform. That means a wide stable base, a midfoot that locks down through the lacing rather than merely closing, and an outsole pattern cut to grip hardwood under sideways load. The upper mixes textile and synthetic zones so it stays soft at the flex points and rigid where the forces go. adidas's cushioning philosophy since Boost launched in its running range in 2013 has favoured energy return over softness, and its basketball platforms follow suit. A white upper on a navy sole is practical in one direction only: the sole hides court dust, the upper does not.
