This release has a synthetic upper in Pure Ruby/Core Black/Lucid Blue. adidas has been building around individual athletes since Adolf Dassler watched competitors and cut shoes for single events rather than whole categories. James Harden is the modern version of that arrangement, a signature basketball athlete whose line has run long enough to have its own design language across generations. Vol. 9 is the latest chapter, and Red Metallic pushes it loud: a saturated red base with metallic surfacing that catches arena light and camera flash. That is deliberate. Signature basketball shoes are built to be seen on broadcast before they are seen in a store, and a metallic red is a shoe designed to register at distance from the baseline.
Metallic red is a statement, so give it room. Recipe one: play it as intended, black or grey technical shorts and a plain tee, where the shoe is the only colour in the frame, on court or at the gym. Recipe two: off court, black cargo trousers with a tapered ankle and a black hoodie, letting the red sit as the single accent from a full dark stack. Basketball shoes run structured and snug through the midfoot, so wear a proper performance sock and lace fully to the top eyelet if you are actually playing. Wipe the outsole clean before court sessions so the traction pattern works, and keep the metallic surface away from abrasive brushes since scuffing dulls the sheen permanently.
adidas basketball has a deeper claim than most brands can make. The Superstar arrived in 1969 with a moulded rubber shell toe cap built to protect players' feet under the basket, and by 1973 it was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the early adopters. That shoe then left the court entirely and became a hip hop uniform. Harden's line sits on that inheritance, and the brand still treats its signature athletes as its most public design brief. Red Metallic is that logic at full volume: a shoe meant to be identified on a highlight clip in half a second.
This is a performance basketball build, so the priorities are containment, torsional stability and a sole that grips a hardwood floor in both directions. The upper is engineered rather than panelled, with the reinforcement concentrated where a guard loads: the lateral forefoot for cuts, the midfoot for the wrap, the heel for lockdown. Red Metallic runs the colour through the whole upper and adds a reflective sheen over it, which reads flat in daylight and bright under artificial light. adidas has a long habit of engineering spectacle in this area, from the adidas 1 of 2005 with a microprocessor adjusting cushioning five million calculations a second to the carbon rod midsoles of the adizero racing line.
