Part of adidas's Samba Jane line. This release has the Gold Metallic/Footwear White/Gum Four colourway. The Samba Jane is what happens when a sports silhouette gets rebuilt around a strap. It keeps the low profile, the gum sole and the stripe placement of the Samba, then replaces the lacing structure with a Mary Jane bar across the instep, which changes the shoe from athletic to something closer to a flat. This women's pair in Gold Metallic over white pushes that further, because a metallic upper on a sports shape is a deliberate contradiction. adidas has been comfortable with contradictions since it invented the modern designer sneaker partnership, working with Yohji Yamamoto on Y-3, with Stella McCartney since 2004, and with Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang after that.
Two ways. A slip dress or a midi skirt with bare ankles, letting the gold read as jewellery and the gum sole keep it from getting precious. Or cropped white trousers with a fine knit and gold hardware elsewhere, so the shoe is echoed rather than isolated. It suits evenings, events and warm weather, not rain and not long distances. Size true and check the strap fit before wearing out, since there is no lace to adjust. Clean metallic surfaces with a barely damp cloth only, avoid soap and brushes, and store with a shoe tree or stuffing so the strap keeps its shape.
The Mary Jane returned through the same door that brought back ballet flats and low-profile everything, and adidas met it by adapting an archive silhouette rather than designing a new one, which is exactly how the brand has operated since Originals became a lifestyle business. Gold on white is the dressed-up end of that. It is a shoe built to be worn to things, not through them, and it belongs to the part of the wardrobe where sportswear and going-out dressing stopped being separate categories. It also solves a specific problem, giving you a flat that has actual grip and an actual sole rather than a slip of leather that gives up after one season.
A metallic-finish upper with a fastening strap across the instep in place of a full lacing system, three stripes running the sidewall and a low gum-family rubber outsole. The strap changes the fit logic completely: instead of tightening progressively, you get one point of hold, so the shoe needs to fit properly out of the box rather than being adjusted into place. Metallic finishes crease where the foot flexes and that creasing is permanent, which is worth knowing before the first wear. Underfoot it stays low and flat like a Samba, so the comfort is familiar even though the closure is not.
