This is the adidas slide as luxury object, with a monogram pattern running across the strap and Red carrying the whole piece. The base item could not be humbler: adidas built the slide for the walk between the pool and the changing room, a functional shoe for wet floors from a company Adolf Dassler founded in his mother's laundry room in Herzogenaurach. Putting a house monogram on it is a deliberate collision of registers, the same trick adidas has been enabling since it effectively invented the modern fashion designer sneaker partnership with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney from 2004. In red, the contrast between function and fashion is fully lit.
A monogrammed red slide is a statement piece, so keep everything under it plain. Recipe one: cream or white wide leg linen trousers with a simple tee, letting the strap be the only pattern and the red the only colour. Recipe two: a black midi dress with the shoe as the single point of colour, which turns a poolside object into evening wear on purpose. Printed straps should never be scrubbed; wipe gently with a damp cloth and mild soap and let it air dry in shade. Rinse off chlorine and salt immediately, since both dull printed surfaces. Store it flat and out of sunlight, which fades red faster than any other tone.
The Three Stripes became valuable to fashion houses because they are legible to everyone, and that legibility was earned outside fashion. A luxury house borrowing that mark is buying decades of that meaning in a single strap. The slide is the ideal vehicle for it, because everyone already understands exactly what the object is.
The architecture is still slide architecture: a wide strap across a moulded footbed, sized for a women's fit, with nothing to adjust and nothing to lace. What changes in a co branded luxury execution is the surface treatment, where the monogram print and the finish quality of the strap replace the plain moulded face of a standard Adilette. The Three Stripes, a mark adidas bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 and has used structurally ever since, sit alongside the house pattern rather than dominating it, which is the visual negotiation the whole product is about. Red on a printed strap will show wear at the flex point first, so that is the area to protect.
