Released on 5 October 2024 and part of the XLG Runner Deluxe line. This release has a mesh upper in Crystal White/Core Black/Iron Metallic. The XLG Runner Deluxe is adidas making a retro runner deliberately oversized, taking the slim proportions of its own archive and inflating them until the shoe becomes the loudest thing you are wearing. White and black is the version that shows the exaggeration most clearly, because the contrast draws out every panel line and every layer of the sole unit. adidas has two ways of using its history: reissue it faithfully, or distort it on purpose. This is firmly the second approach, and it belongs to the same lineage as the brand's long habit of chasing spectacle rather than only refining what already works well enough.
Big shoes need big trousers or none at all. Wide leg black trousers with a boxy white tee lets the sole unit sit as intended, or baggy grey sweatpants with a hoodie for the fully relaxed version. Avoid slim jeans, which make the proportions look accidental rather than chosen. The wide base is genuinely comfortable for long walking days, so treat it as a travel and city shoe. Clean the white panels early with a soft brush and mild soap, use an eraser block on the midsole sidewall, and keep the shoe out of prolonged sun because large white midsoles yellow visibly.
adidas separates lifestyle and performance by mark, the Trefoil for Originals and the three angled bars for sport, and exaggerated retro runners live in the gap between them. The brand's authority to do this comes from a catalogue that culture claimed on its own terms: hip hop took the Superstar wholesale, Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986 and then signed the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company, and Originals silhouettes became the base layer of European casual dressing. Once your archive is that widely worn, distorting it becomes a legitimate design move.
A layered upper mixing smooth and textured panels with the Three Stripes carried across the midfoot, over an intentionally oversized sole unit with a broad, tall footprint. The bulk is the design: a wider base changes how the shoe reads under a trouser hem and gives you more material underfoot than any archive runner ever had. White dominant uppers on a shoe this size are a commitment, since there is simply more surface to keep clean and the midsole sidewall is the first thing to scuff on kerbs. The trade you get is a softer, more forgiving ride than the flat court silhouettes adidas is currently better known for.
