The 450 is the strangest looking shoe from a partnership adidas has ended. Stone Marine pairs a pale sandy knit upper with a marine blue, a cooler and more graphic treatment than the earth tones the line usually chose for itself. The Yeezy programme ran from a December 2013 announcement and a February 2015 launch until October 2022, when adidas terminated the partnership after its design partner's antisemitic remarks and the White Lives Matter shirt shown at Paris Fashion Week, saying the comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. It is not a live adidas line. This pair exists now as a design curiosity from a closed chapter, nothing more.
The sole shape dominates, so the outfit should be simple and cropped. Slim black joggers cuffed above the ankle with a plain grey crewneck lets the outsole read as intended. Or wear sand coloured wide trousers with the hem breaking just at the top of the shoe so only the marine blue sections show. Laceless knit shoes stretch with wear, so if you are between sizes go down rather than up. Clean the knit with a soft brush and mild soap only, never a machine, and dry away from direct heat since heat distorts moulded soles permanently and there is no way to reshape them afterwards.
The commercial scale is the honest story: at its peak the line was generating around 1.7 billion dollars a year, roughly a tenth of adidas revenue, which is why these shoes still carry weight on resale platforms. adidas did not destroy the leftover inventory, agreeing in February 2023 to sell around 500 million dollars of remaining stock with part of the proceeds going to organisations that fight hate. Read this pair as an artefact of an era in adidas design, not as a current brand association, and do not expect the silhouette to return to the range.
A stretch knit upper that pulls on like a sock, married to a heavily sculpted outsole whose fingers wrap up around the edges of the foot. That sculptural sole unit is the entire visual argument of the shoe, and it is why the 450 divides people more sharply than anything else from the line. The knit means the fit is forgiving across the width, but the wrap around outsole makes the shoe feel structured rather than soft once it is on. There is no lace system to adjust, so the fit you get out of the box is the fit you keep, and sizing accurately matters more here than on a conventional trainer.
