Designed by Kanye West and released on 16 May 2020 as part of the Yeezy 500 line. This release has a suede upper in Tyrian/Tyrian/Tyrian. The 500 arrived in December 2017 as the low, dense, deliberately awkward runner in the line, and the High takes that same mass and pulls it up over the ankle into something closer to a boot. Tyrian is the most loaded name in the family. Tyrian purple was the ancient dye extracted from sea snails, historically the most expensive colour a person could wear, which puts it in a different register from Moonrock and Desert Rat while keeping the same instinct: name the colour after the material it came from. On a heavy purple high top the reference lands hard. This is one of the few Yeezy releases where the colour carries a story older than the label itself.
Deep purple over the ankle is a strong shape, so give it clean lines above. First recipe: black straight leg trousers with no break so the collar of the boot is visible, a black tee, a long charcoal coat. Second recipe: dark indigo denim tucked slightly at the hem, a grey heavyweight sweatshirt, letting the purple be the only colour. Avoid brown outerwear, which muddies it. Occasion: cold weather, evenings, city wear rather than trekking, since this is a fashion boot silhouette rather than technical footwear. Fit is snug at the ankle and roomy at the toe, so true to size is usual. Care: brush nap dry, never soak, use foam cleaner on mesh, and protect before first wear.
By the time the 500 High appeared, the line had already changed how footwear is sold, with limited drops producing queue culture, bot buying and a resale market that turned release day into a mainstream event. The high top variants matter because they show the design language moving off the runner template and into boots, which is where the catalogue was heading late on. Forbes in 2020 called the commercial rise one of the great retail stories of the century. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after Kanye West's antisemitic public remarks, which the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, so the boot experiments stopped there.
This is a layered build rather than a one piece, with the upper assembled from panels of differing texture and then extended into a high collar that wraps the ankle. Boost, the expanded TPU pellet foam that gave the line its bounce and its speckled look, sits in the cushioning below, which is what stops a shoe this heavy from feeling punishing. Tyrian runs across the whole shoe including the sole, so the bulk reads as one saturated mass rather than as stacked components. There is no visible logo. Expect real weight, a snug ankle, a roomy forefoot and a break in period, and treat nap and mesh sections separately when cleaning because they respond very differently.
