Fade belongs to the stretch of Boost 350 V2 releases where the interest moved from colour to gradient. The model launched on 24 September 2016 and by this point the silhouette needed no introduction, so the design question became what a single knit could do across its own length. Fade answers that with a graduated wash that runs from light to dark rather than a flat tone or a contrast stripe, a technique that only works because the upper is knitted in one piece to begin with. It still sits inside the label's material first colour thinking, the one that gave us Oxford Tan, Moonrock and Beluga, but it treats the knit as a canvas instead of a swatch. It is one of the more technically interesting late colourways for exactly that reason.
A gradient does the styling work, so keep the rest of the outfit single toned. First recipe: black straight leg trousers, a black tee, a light grey unstructured jacket, letting the shoe carry the only shift in tone. Second recipe: mid blue denim with a cuffed hem, a white tee and a cream overshirt, which picks up the lighter end of the fade. Occasion: everyday street wear, casual travel, warm evenings. Do not pair with heavily patterned trousers, because the gradient stops reading. Fit is snug and narrow through the midfoot as with all 350 V2s, so half a size up is the usual advice. Care: dry brush after wear, spot clean with mild soap and a cloth, never machine wash, and dry in shade to protect the lighter section of the gradient.
The 350 V2 is the shoe that made the drop a mainstream event. Announced release times and deliberately limited stock created queues, bot buying and a resale economy that the rest of the footwear industry copied wholesale, and the silhouette became one of the decade's most recognisable objects. GQ called these the most influential sneakers in 2016. The end was abrupt: adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after Kanye West made antisemitic public remarks the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and contrary to its values. Later colourways like this one are therefore a closed set, and the gradient uppers are among the last design ideas the collaboration produced.
Primeknit is the mechanism, the one piece machine knitted upper that gives the 350 V2 a sock like fit with no traditional panels, and a graduated colour effect is only possible because there are no seams or overlays to interrupt it. Boost sits below, the expanded TPU pellet foam that supplies the model's bounce and its speckled surface. Nothing on the shoe carries a visible logo, matching the anti branding stance across most adidas Yeezy models. In practice the fit is the familiar 350 V2 story: close through the midfoot, low volume over the instep, light for its bulk. A gradient upper also means uneven soiling is more visible in the pale zone, so the toe is the area to protect.
