Released on 12 December 2023 and part of the adiFOM Q line. This release has a eva upper in Footwear White/Grey One/Grey Two. adidas has always been willing to chase engineering spectacle rather than play safe. The company marketed the adidas 1 in 2005 as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor running five million calculations a second to adjust cushioning, and it built springblade with splayed blades instead of foam. The Adifom line belongs to that streak of curiosity, but it arrives at the opposite answer: instead of adding parts, remove almost all of them and mould the shoe from foam as a single object. The Q is the most sculptural version of that idea, a shape that borrows the visual memory of adidas archive footwear and renders it as a solid form. Footwear White with grey is the clearest execution, because monochrome lets you actually see the geometry.
Two ways. Loose and easy: wide grey sweatpants, an oversized white tee, and a thick white sock, where the whole fit becomes a study in soft neutrals. Or as a hard contrast piece: slim black trousers and a black jacket, so the white foam shape sits at the bottom of a sharp fit and disrupts it deliberately. Correct for short journeys, home to shop runs, summer, festivals and travel through airports where slipping shoes off matters. Not correct for long walking days or wet slippery ground, since foam soles give up grip when polished by wear. Moulded foam runs generous, so consider your usual size and try with socks. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, and keep it out of direct heat, which can warp a moulded shoe permanently.
Moulded foam footwear turned from a joke into a category because comfort stopped being embarrassing, and adidas moved into it with a design language rather than a copy. Where the brand's cultural weight normally comes from adoption, the Superstar being taken up by hip hop or the Spezial by terrace culture, the Adifom is the rarer case of adidas leading with a form nobody asked for. It draws on the visual grammar of the archive without reproducing any single model, and that abstraction is why it works: you recognise adidas in it immediately without being able to name what it is quoting.
This is moulded foam rather than an upper stitched to a sole, which changes everything about how it behaves. There are no seams to fail, no lining to wear through and no break in period in the traditional sense, but the fit is fixed by the mould rather than adjusted by lacing. Foam is light, warm in cold weather and cool enough in heat if the shoe is open, and it takes dirt on the surface rather than into a weave, so it cleans easily. Footwear White with grey gives you tonal separation between the body and the contrasting element, which is what stops a single material shoe from reading as a plastic blob.
