Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 21 June 2021 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/White/University Blue. Nike has been making its technology visible since 1987, when it cut a window into a midsole so you could see the Air unit. A UV colour changing Air Force 1 extends that instinct in a different direction: instead of showing you what is inside the shoe, it shows you where you are standing. Take it into daylight and the panels shift, take it back indoors and they return. Putting that on the Air Force 1 is the correct choice, because the model is the plainest and most widely worn shoe Nike makes, so a surface trick registers immediately on panels everybody already knows the shape of by heart.
Two recipes. First, let daylight do the work: plain white tee, mid-wash denim, nothing else with a colour shift, so the change is the only surprise in the outfit. Second, indoors-first: all-black clothing where the shoe reads as a plain white sneaker until you step outside, which is the better party trick. The model runs long, so half a size down is usually right unless your foot is very wide. Dry conditions only. Never use solvent-based cleaners or strong brushes on a reactive finish, wipe gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, keep them out of prolonged direct sun in storage, and box them away from radiators.
The Air Force 1 became a cultural fixture the way Nike's other landmark shoes did, moving out of basketball and into urban and hip hop dress from the 1980s onward, then into mainstream American youth uniform and later into casual and athleisure wardrobes. Because everyone owns a version, the model has become Nike's testing ground for gimmicks, materials and ideas that would look absurd on a performance shoe. That is a direct descendant of the visible Air decision of 1987, when the company worked out that a technology people can see is worth more than one they only feel. A shoe that changes in sunlight is that logic pushed to its most playful end.
The base is the standard low Air Force 1 build: a thick midsole, a wide flat outsole, large uninterrupted panels and Nike Air sealed inside, the pressurised gas unit that has been the brand's cushioning platform since 1987. The colour change works on the surface treatment of those panels, which react to ultraviolet light and shift tone in sunlight before reverting in shade. The large panels are what make it read so clearly, since there is little seam interruption to break the effect. Practically this means two things: the effect lives entirely in the finish, so abrasion and harsh cleaners are its enemies, and the shoe underneath still behaves like every other Air Force 1, heavy, firm and stable.
