Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 September 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Washed Blue/White/Blue. SE means Special Edition, the designation Jordan Brand uses when a familiar silhouette gets a material change rather than a colour change, and Washed Denim is a material change you can see from across a room. Denim on an Air Jordan 1 is a direct nod to how the shoe actually entered culture: not on a court but under jeans, in the collision of basketball and hip hop that Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising helped stage. Peter Moore's original panel layout, drawn before the shoe reached the public on 1 April 1985, is what makes the swap work. Each panel becomes a separate piece of denim, and the shoe ends up looking like a jacket someone cut up rather than a trainer someone dyed.
Denim on denim is the obvious move and it works if the tones differ. Recipe one: dark indigo straight leg jeans with a white tee, letting the washed lighter shoe sit clearly apart from the trousers. Recipe two: cream chinos, a navy crew knit and a denim shirt, where the shoe echoes the shirt rather than the trousers. Avoid matching the exact same wash head to toe. True to size for most feet. Care is textile care: spot clean with mild soap and a soft cloth, no soaking, no machine washing, and dry naturally away from heat. Keep them out of heavy rain, because wet denim uppers can transfer colour onto socks.
Air Jordan reached culture through basketball meeting hip hop, and denim is the fabric of that meeting point. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan and his sneakers into their verses; Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon put the shoe into film language. The Air Jordan 1 is also what turned sneakers into a collecting activity, with original 1985 pairs reaching about 20,000 dollars on StockX and a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. A denim SE is that history worn plainly, the shoe made from the same cloth as the clothes the culture that adopted it was already wearing.
Denim behaves nothing like leather and that is the whole point. It fades rather than scuffs, it softens rather than creases, and a washed finish means the fading has been started for you at the factory so the shoe arrives with a lived in tone instead of a raw one. The Low cut keeps the collar below the ankle. Style code CZ8455 100 identifies this pair. Practically, treat it like a garment: no leather conditioner, no aggressive brushing, and expect the high wear points at the toe and the heel to lighten first. That fading is not damage, it is how the material is supposed to age, and it makes each pair diverge from the next.
