Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 May 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Gym Red/White. Gym Red, black and white is the closest a Mid gets to the palette that made the model famous. Those three colours function as brand property in themselves, alongside the number 23, and they trace directly to a Chicago team kit and a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 in a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars, roughly three times any other in the league. Peter Moore drew the shoe with Bruce Kilgore, it reached the public on 1 April 1985, and its first 50,000 pairs sold out against a 3 million dollar three year forecast. The Mid is where that colour story became something you can wear to work on a Tuesday without explaining anything.
Let the shoe be the loudest thing. First recipe: black jeans, plain white tee, black cap, red appearing nowhere else. Second: grey sweatpants cuffed at the ankle with a black hoodie, the Mid collar showing cleanly above the hem. Do not pair with a red top: two reds rarely match and the mismatch is what people notice. Everyday wear, weekends, gigs, and it handles bad weather better than any pale colourway in the range. Lace snug through the upper eyelets for support. Clean the white base with a soft brush and mild soap, treat the red panels gently, and store with paper in the toe box to slow the crease.
Red and black is the palette at the heart of the Banned advertising, built on a league uniform rule that required shoes at least 51 percent white and carried a 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike paid rather than redesign. That campaign taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and it is why this colour combination still reads as the default aggressive Jordan. Nike's Spike Lee directed campaigns with Lee as Mars Blackmon put it on screen, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put it in music. This is the most recognisable palette in sneakers.
Panelled leather with a Mid collar that sits below the ankle bone. Three colours across separate stitched panels is the model's most legible configuration: red quarters, black overlays and a white base give you three depths to read, so the shoe looks structured even standing still. That height gives shape retention without the fold of a High, which is why it sits more neatly under a tapered trouser. Rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle. The white base is the panel that ages the pair, greying at the midsole edge before the leather shows anything. Red panels can transfer or dull if cleaned with strong solvents, so keep the cleaning mild and separate.
