Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Starfish/Black/Sail. Two unlikely things meet here. The first is golf, a sport Jordan Brand entered long after basketball, in the stretch where the house had already moved outside its original game: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016, sponsor of Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, a Nike division generating about 5.1 billion dollars by 2022. The second is a mule, a backless shoe, which is the least athletic construction in footwear. Shattered Backboard is one of the brand's established colour names, an orange forward palette that people recognise the way they recognise Chicago or Royal. Putting a famous colour code on a backless golf shoe is the kind of joke only a brand this secure can make.
Two ways to use it. On course or at the range: plain shorts or golf trousers in stone or black, a solid polo, no other bright colour, so the orange is a deliberate break in an otherwise correct outfit. Off course: black shorts with a white tee and low socks, worn as a slip on for warm days and short distances. Do not treat it as a walking shoe for a full city day; a backless build fatigues the foot over distance. Wear it with a low or no show sock so the open heel stays clean. Wipe grass and dirt off immediately, since the pale panels stain, brush the sole edge, and dry naturally away from heat.
Jordan Brand's cultural licence comes from the 1: the Banned advertising, built on a league rule requiring shoes at least 51 percent white and a 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike paid rather than redesign, taught the market that transgression sells. Golf is where that attitude gets applied to the most conservative dress code in sport. Wearing a Jordan colour code on a course is a small act of the same order, which is why these releases land with people who play and with people who never will. The silhouette does the talking before you reach the tee.
A mule has no heel counter, so the foot is held by the throat of the shoe and the lacing alone. That changes everything about how it wears: it is fast to put on and take off, which is the entire pitch for a golf context where the shoe comes off at the clubhouse, and it offers no rear support at all, which is why it is a walking and range shoe rather than a running one. The upper carries the Shattered Backboard blocking across the panels that remain, which means the colour reads more concentrated than it does on a full 1 because there is less shoe to spread it over. Keep the collar edge clean, since that exposed line is what the eye lands on.
