Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 March 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Wolf Grey/Sail/Photon Dust/Black. A mule is a backless shoe, and turning the Air Jordan 1 into one for golf is the furthest the silhouette has travelled from a basketball court. Jordan Brand has been moving outside its sport for years, becoming sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and sponsoring Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club, and the golf line is the most lifestyle facing arm of that expansion. Wolf Grey with black keeps it appropriate for a course with a dress code. The front of the shoe still carries the panel structure Peter Moore drew in 1984, which is the only reason a backless slip on is recognisable as an Air Jordan at all.
Use it as a transition shoe rather than a full round shoe. Clubhouse to car, practice green, warm ups: pair it with tapered stone or navy golf trousers and a plain polo, keeping the grey as the quietest thing you are wearing. Off course it works with shorts and a plain tee in hot weather, where a backless shoe is the point. Wear a low sock or none, since a visible sock ruins the line. Size true to length but check the instep fit, because a backless shoe that is too long will slip at every step. Clean grass off promptly and dry away from heat.
The mule exists because Jordan Brand is now a lifestyle house that happens to own basketball history. It became a standalone Nike division in 1997 with its own roster, apparel and collaborations, and by 2022 was generating about 5.1 billion dollars. A backless golf slide is only commercially sane inside a business that large, where the silhouette itself is the asset and the category is negotiable. The signed athlete list runs well past basketball too, including Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott in the NFL and Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter in baseball. The shoe follows the same logic: go where the audience already is.
Removing the heel changes everything about how the shoe works. There is no collar to hold you, so retention comes entirely from the instep and the lace or strap across the top of the foot, which means it is designed for walking and standing rather than for lateral movement. Underneath, this is the golf setup: traction arranged for turf rather than for pivoting on a court. Grey and black leather is the practical choice for grass, dark enough to survive stains and light enough not to bake in sun. Treat it as a leather shoe, not a technical boot: brush off soil before it dries and let it dry naturally.
