Nike's plan for the Air Jordan was modest: about 3 million dollars of sales across three years, bought with a rookie's identity rather than a superstar's, because the company was losing basketball to Converse and adidas. The first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe went on to pass 150 million dollars. This Retro High takes that Peter Moore pattern and runs electro orange, a synthetic, high visibility tone that has nothing to do with 1985 and everything to do with what the silhouette became once it stopped being sports equipment. Orange on a Jordan 1 is a modern colour language applied to an old shape, and the contrast between the two is the entire appeal of retro releases in this line.
Utility
Give the orange room. Recipe one: black tapered sweatpants, a heavyweight black hoodie, white socks, so the shoe is the only colour anywhere on you. Recipe two: mid wash denim, a grey marl crew, an olive or navy jacket, with the laces swapped to white if the stock pair are too much. High tops want a hem that stops at or just above the collar; a puddling trouser hides the best part of the shoe. The high top is the shape the Banned advertising made famous, built on the league's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white and on Nike's decision to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than change the design. The line reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop, with Spike Lee directing early advertising as Mars Blackmon and rappers from Ice Cube to Jay-Z referencing the shoes in music. Jordan Brand's later collaborators, Travis Scott, Off-White, Supreme, KAWS, Comme des Garcons and Dior, all worked on this same silhouette.
Construction
A Retro High keeps the full original geometry: the tall collar, the wrapping panels, the swoosh sitting proud across the quarter, and the ankle support that made it a basketball shoe in the first place. The Wings logo, a basketball with wings and the mark of the line's earliest era, lives on that high collar, which is the single detail a low cut cannot give you. Electro orange is a saturated tone that shows every crease sharply, so the toe box will map your walk faster than a dark colourway would. The pairing against white keeps the shape legible.
