Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 July 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Wolf Grey. Barons refers to Jordan's baseball chapter, and Jordan Brand has since built a real presence in that sport, with signed MLB athletes including Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter. The Retro Low OG designation is the important part of the name here: OG means the original panel pattern and proportions Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, cut low, rather than a modernised low top that only resembles it. The shoe those proportions come from was made for Jordan on 17 November 1984 and released to the public on 1 April 1985, selling out its first 50,000 pairs against a Nike forecast of roughly 3 million dollars over three years. Baseball is the detour, and the shoe is the constant.
This is a summer shoe with a heritage colour scheme, so keep the styling plain. First: light wash denim with a cuff sitting above the collar, a white tee, a soft chore jacket, socks white and short. Second: khaki or stone chinos, a navy polo or knit, leather belt, which turns the shoe into the sporty element in an otherwise conservative outfit. Do not overdress it. Lows suit heat and travel far better than highs, and they slip on and off easily at airports. Foam cleaner and a soft brush on the panels, a damp cloth for the midsole, no solvent, and let them air out between wears since low cuts collect more sweat than they appear to.
Jordan Brand's reach across sport is the context this colourway lives in: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016, sponsor of Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, with signed athletes across the NFL in Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott and the MLB in Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter. The cultural base is older and came from outside sport entirely, with Spike Lee directing Nike's first Air Jordan campaigns while playing Mars Blackmon, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes. A colourway pointing at baseball on a basketball silhouette is exactly the kind of cross reference this brand has always traded in.
Retro Low OG builds keep the toe cap, quarter panel and heel counter as separate leather pieces exactly as the 1985 pattern specified, with the collar cut below the ankle. That fidelity is why an OG low sits differently on the foot than a general low: the panel proportions are drawn for a high top and then shortened, which gives the Swoosh more room than modern lows allow. Nike Air entered the line at the Air Jordan 2, so this is flat and firm underfoot with no cushioning unit, and a low collar removes what little ankle containment the high offered. Lace through the top eyelet even though the low tempts you not to, or the heel will loosen within months.
